Controversial change to criminal law halted by Karzai

The Afghan Parliament has recently passed a change to the criminal code which would have banned close relatives from testifying against each other in criminal proceedings.

This would have affected especially women who come forward to pursue offenders who are close relatives, i.e. brothers, fathers or in-laws who are often the perpetrators in violation of women's rights and their dignity in Afghanistan.

After wide-spread international protest and petitions submitted to heads of state and President Karzai, the Afghan President has now refused his signature under the bill and has asked parliament to review and amend it.
